Penthouse, Brussels 2012

This building on the Great Hertstraat in Brussels was built in 1900, designed by Jules Barbier. The building in Art Nouveau style, for the Galerie d'Art Leroy Frères, is unique in Brussels because of the planned design feature of the exhibition space at the rear. In 1995 the building was protected as a monument. It has been completely restored and now is the new dependence of the auction house Lempertz in Brussels.

Lempertz deals and exhibits ancient and modern art, so to express this significance with architecture means, we decided to add a modern piece of space to the historical building.

After studying the architecture of the building, it was clear that we could only add an annex in the rear part of the building as a roof extension to be used as an apartment, which could be disconnected at any time.

The main construction of the extension is a Vierndeel steel truss, which spans 14 m wide and is fixed punctual to the neighbor walls. The design is generated from the spatial character of the steep roof of the old building to obtain a correlation between the old and new spaces.

Townhouses (3), Braunschweig 2009

At the central town square of the new residential quarter St. Leonhards Garten in Braunschweig, terraced townhouses of 3-4 stories and 6-8 meters in width are being built.

As part of quality assurance, detailed design guidelines were developed for St. Leonhards Garten, aiming for both exceptional uniformity and individual design freedom, vibrant diversity, and personal identification. The final allocation of plots was made subject to the fixed planning agreed upon with the design advisory board.

The design is based on the premise of a balanced relationship between unity and diversity. While maintaining a consistent appearance towards the public space, with coordinated materials and proportions, individual interpretations of contemporary urban living are developed within the Late 19th-century environment of the eastern ring area. The constructive possibilities of the brick facade and the classic combination with stucco elements dominate the facade design.
